The Top Falls See Larger Image

A triple flight of waterfalls, carved out by the River Ure over nearly a one-mile stretch on its descent to mid-Wensleydale. The falls are quite spectacular during wet weather, as thousands of gallons of water cascade over the series of broad limestone steps. They are spectacular all year round and there a numerous opportunities for taking photographs along them. During the summer months when there is not as much water going over them with care you can descend down onto the rocks and get a closer view of the river and falls as they cascade over the rocks. They are not big drop falls, but a cascading set over a long stretch of the river, but gallons of water cascade over the limestone steps.. The woodland walk to the lower parts of the falls makes it a nice location to visit and explore.

The upper fall has been featured in the film Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves. As well as being able to get close to the edge of the river and the area which is well known in the film, from the road bridge you can also get views of the larger fall which send the water down into the meandering river below and under the road.

Nearby there is a Yorkshire Dales National Park Information Centre and in here you can park the car and from here access the signposted walks which wind through the wooded gorge.

In addition to the falls, there are walks which wind through the wooded valley, some an easy stroll, while others a little more challenging, offering views of the river and falls. There is also a circular walk which brings you back to where you started. Wild flowers appear in the spring and summer like bluebells, primroses and wood anemones, and wild birds, squirrels and deer may also be seen.
