St David’s Day

Saint David is the "patron saint" of Wales. He was a member of the Celtic church and died on 1st March 589 A.D. There will be events in many towns in Wales, and Welsh communities in other parts of the UK will also gather together in pubs, churches or other places.

Yorkshire Brass Band Championships

3rd and 4th March 2012 St Georges Hall, Bradford, Yorks. More than 60 Bands from around Britain such as Black Dyke, Brighouse and Rastrick, Grimethorpe Colliery, YBS and many others all competing in the Championship Section.

Manchester Irish Festival

2nd to 18th March 2012 Takes place at various venues around the city showcasing Irish culture with the St Patrick’s parade of over 70 floats, bands and walking groups on the 14th March into Manchester City Centre. See their website for details on the route.

The Westcountry Game and Equine Festival

10th and 11th March 2012 Bath & West Showground, Shepton Mallet, Somerset. 9am-5pm. Small Holders featuring cattle, alpacas, llamas, pigs etc, Shooting, dog and Conservation shows, 200 country trade stands, indoor equestrian arena with show jumping, stallion parades, horse and hound challenge and more.

Cheltenham Festival

13th to 16th March 2012 Cheltenham Racecourse, Glos. Gates Open 10:30am, first race at 2pm each day. One of the main horse racing events, 2011 sees' it celebrating it's centenary (100th year). Jump racing (fences). The GOLD CUP race is on the Friday.

The Kiplingcotes Derby

Etton, East Yorks. England’s oldest horse race, said to date from 1519. The race over 4 miles of farm lanes and tracks starting in Etton, near Market Weighton and finishing at Londesborough Wold Farm.

Shire Horse Spring Show

16th to 18th March 2012 East of England Show Ground, Peterborough. Over 200 shire horses on display in the Grand Indoor Arena. A 2 day event organised by the Shire Horse Society. There will be demonstrations and classes featuring harness, turnout, ridden and cross country driving, as well as 200 trade stands.

British Alpaca Futurity

16th and 17th March 2012 NEC, Birmingham. Hall 3A. It is the international education and networking event of the year with some of the best British born alpacas in the show ring, a catwalk fashion show of garments made from Alpaca fleece and an international fleece show. Other competitions being showcased include, photography and art, and alpaca fibre crafts. There will also be a Alpaca fibre Arts Village where you can buy products made from Alpaca fibre from the various producers. Entry is £5 per family. Parking £8

Head of the River Race

Chiswick Bridge, London. First race at 11am. A boat race on the River Thames in London for "eights", rowers and one "cox". There are several hundred boats competing, setting off at 10-second intervals. Race ends at Putney Bridge.

Kempley Daffodil Weekend

17th and 18th March 2012 Kempley, Gloucestershire. The Daffodil Way is 10 mile footpath through the Windcross Parishes in NW Gloucestershire - wild daffodils once grew in such profusion here that they were picked and sent to market. Kempley has a Daffodil Weekend as a fund raising event featuring guided walks and exhibitions.

West Somerset Railway Spring Steam Gala

17th and 18th March 2012 Bishops Lydeard to Minehead, Somerset. Up to 12 engines taking part. Ride on the trains, first train out of Bishops Lydeard station at 9:05am, visit museums, sheds and workshops and take part in activities. Lots of photo ops.

Thoresby Park Craft & Country Fair

17th and 18th March 2012 Thoresby Park, nr Ollerton, Nottinghamshire. 10am to 6pm. Glassblowing, woodturning, blacksmiths, artists, potters, textiles etc. Arena events include falconry, gundogs, horses etc. Also trade stands and children’s entertainment.

8am Start at Tattenham Corner, Epson Downs and finishes in Madeira Drive, Brighton Sussex. Pre 1915 motorcycles take to the road, walk into a living museum for the day.

St Patrick’s Day Parade and Festival

Starts at Green Park, London at 12noon to 6pm, finishing at Trafalgar Square. As part of St Patrick’s Day Festival Week a parade of marching bands, floats, costume characters, stilt walkers and street theatre. It completes the route in Trafalgar Square where the festival is taking place.

Hawick Reivers Festival

23rd to 25th March 2012 Hawick, Scottish Borders. A weekend of events including: 27/03 Procession in the High Street starts at 10.45am, 16th Century market and encampment at Hawick Civic Space and Drumlanrigs Tower 10:30am to 4pm. 2pm Firework Spectacular and The Hot Trod Torchlight Procession starts at 6.45pm. Plus loads more going on all weekend.
