Heritage Coasts

We are attempting to list all places where photographers can photograph our Heritage Coasts within the UK.

There are 32 protected Heritage Coasts in England and this accounts for about 33% of England’s coastline. Under this scheme the designated coastlines are conserved as Heritage Coasts. They are coastlines which are managed to protect their natural beauty and where appropriate to allow access for visitors. The first Heritage Coastline was the chalk cliffs of Beachy Head in Sussex and the latest to be added was the Durham Coastline in 2001. Some of the coastline that has been protected such as Flamborough Head and Bempton Cliffs, have been so as to protect their seabird colonies.

Most of them are a part of a National Park or an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and for this reason they are not legally protected but have been defined by agreement of the relevant maritime local authorities and Natural England.

Most of them are accessible by a network of public footpaths and bridleways and some are designated as National Trails.   To find a walk that may involve part of our coast or runs through one of these Heritage Coasts take a look at our Walks Section.

As well as protecting a specific section of our coastline, there are also many items of interest such as heritage buildings situated along many of them. For example a tool which mariners have used for hundreds of years to make sure they don't run into our coast or get themselves into a wreck situation are Lighthouses, and we have over 250 detailed within our Lighthouse Section. Some of those listed below are on some of the many Islands we have around our coast, check out our Islands Section for more.

Where the names in the first column is hyperlinked this links to a Location page with more information on this site and over time more of these will be added, we will be delighted if some of you would like to also produce location pages.
