Duntisbourne Leer Ford

Duntisbourne Leer, Gloucestershire

Location Guide

Duntisbourne Leer is one of a group of villages and hamlets known locally as 'The Dunitsbournes'.

The River Dunt runs through the group and at various points where the road crosses the river there are Fords. The most well known and photographed of these being this one at Duntisbourne Leer, where the Dun Brook flows across the road. It appears in most tourist guides and travel books that cover the Cotswolds and as soon as you see the picture it will be instantly recognisable, having appeared on tins of biscuits and other products.

Duntisbourne Leer is in fact a hamlet, it's local parish church being in the nearby village of Duntisbourne Abbots. As you leave the A417 for 'The Duntisbournes' you come to a fork in the road, going off right will take you to Duntisbourne Abbots, keep to the left fork you will eventually start to go downhill and at the bottom will come to the Ford, with a farm cottage ahead of you and a cottage to your right. You can drive through this Ford. The roads in this area are single track so parking up can be a problem, but as long as you only intend to take a picture and then move on, pulling on the side where the houses park their cars in the evenings is acceptable.

The Ford is shallow and clear and it almost laps the doorsteps of the farm and cottages. The hamlet once belonged to the Abbey of Lire in Normandy, France until 1416 when it was given to Cirencester Abbey. It is probably the most photogenic ford with the ability to take a picture without having visible signs of modern life, it usually has a couple of ducks or geese paddling in it, and even in the summer when it's probably at it's shallowest it gives a perfect Cotswold image, on sunny days even being able to have reflections in it. It is beautiful.

Modern life has got into this image as they forgot to take in their refuge bin.
