Aerial Photo Marinas.com (more images available) There are 3 small lighthouses together at this location. The Calf of Man is a small island off the southern tip of the Isle of Man. It is a bird sanctuary, but tours are available from Port Erin. Today's operational Lighthouse is the white one in the middle of the above photo and it was built in 1968. Its octagonal tower sites on one corner of a one storey granite service building. The other two you can see, Calf of Man Low and Calf of Man High, are the original two lighthouses on this point which were built in 1818, and they are placed so that the line of their lights could point towards Chicken Rock, a submerged rock off this southern tip of the island. They are no longer functional. They were operational for 60 years, until when in 1875 a new lighthouse built on Chicken Rock itself came into operation. Calf of Man Low is a 15 metre stone tower with lantern and gallery, whilst Calf of Man High is an 18 metre stone tower with lantern and gallery. The two storey keepers houses on both, continued to be used until 1912 when the light keepers left after control of this part of the sea moving to St Mary Port, but they are both now in poor condition. Both of these are now owned by the Manx National Trust.
