Longdon-on-Tern Aqueduct

Longdon-on-Tern, Shropshire

Location Guide

Image from Wikipedia

Built by Thomas Telford it was the first large scale cast iron navigable aqueduct at Longdon-on-Tern, Shropshire.

It still stands in a field although the rest of the canal was abandoned in 1944. The construction of this is very similar to the better known Pontcysyllte Aqueduct  on the Llangollen Canal, built later by Telford,  although its far higher off the ground.

This was built to replace a stone aqueduct that was wasted away in a storm.

Now a scheduled monument there is public access to it from an adjoining road, a layby has a brown tourist sign getting you onto a public footpath that goes through a field and a couple of cattle safety gates.
