Portishead, Somerset

Location Guide

Ariel Photo by Marinas.com

Built to assist shipping coming into and out of Avonmouth, on the side of the Severn near Bristol.

It was built in 1894 converted to electric and automated in 1941.

The old photocrome photo (right) was probably taken soon after 1900.

In May 2010 Trinity House confirmed its intention to discontinue the light within the next few years.

An unusually well preserved late 19th century prefabricated lighthouse, 11m (36ft) tall, its a round, 6-legged cast iron tower with an enclosed watch room, lantern and gallery, all painted white. It has a 4th order Fresnel lens in use.

If you want to see it, it may be wise to see it sooner rather than later as in May 2010 Trinity House confirmed its intention to discontinue the light within the next few years.
