Chaine Tower Lighthouse

Antrim, Northern Ireland

Location Guide

This lighthouse is a stone tower with a conical roof and it is situated on the west side of the entrance to Larne Lough. It was completed in January 1888 and was erected as a memorial to James Chaine who was MP for Country Antrim.

In the background is the lighthouse on Ferris Point at the approach to Larne Lough.

It was first operational in 1899 and was an aid to ships to get past Hunter Rock and into the mouth of the harbour. Its original light was powered by gas and was converted to electricity in 1935.

There is no light keepers accommodation on this lighthouse as it was always built as being an unmanned lighthouse, although it did have a light keeper for a short period between 1900 and 1905, who was also the assistant keeper for the Maidens Lighthouse and accommodation was rented for him in Larne and the tower reverted back to being an unwatched tower.
