Gorleston Lighthouses

Gorleston, Norfolk

Location Guide

Gorleston (Range Rear) Lighthouse

Gorleston Lighthouse taken from the pier - Photo by Charles Shelbourne

A similar view from an old Photochrome postcard shows it soon after 1900.

The River Yare makes a right angled bend to the east just before reaching the sea, and this lighthouse stands by the bend displaying its light through the river mouth.

Low or Harbour Light

In most cases where you get a rear light it is tall and you find a shorter light nearer to the sea. The old postcard image right shows a smaller lighthouse on the pier at Gorleston. Another image of it, is on the old postcard photo below from around 1915. This was probably the short light.  This light was set up in 1852.

From all the photos I can see. I don't think it exists now. I have been told that it was replaced by a harbour masters office around 1955, now used as a coastguard station, photo, and that this carries a red flashing light.

However a Google satellite view appears to show nothing now there.
